Two new reports highlight the gaps in employability skills among college graduates.
The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities surveyed stakeholders across 31 universities on the importance of certain skills and how prepared students are in those skills, as well as how to better prepare students in those areas, according to the executive summary for the reports.
The report identifies 11 key skills gaps among graduates out of the total 42 skills offered in the survey. The skills include dealing with conflict constructively, building professional relationships and understanding workplace roles, among others.

In Viet Nam, COVID-19 infection has unfolded in three phases. The first phase developed from late January to mid February 2020. During this period, all reported cases had in common a clear travel history to China. The second phase, which began in early March after a long stretch with no reported COVID-19 cases in Viet Nam, saw the emergence of cases linked to travel from countries other than China that became new viral epicentres. Both phases were characterized by a clear traceability of infections, which means that all reported cases in Viet Nam could be ultimately tracked back to close contact with infected individuals outside of the country. As of 20 April 2020, no new case has been reported for four consecutive days. The entire country still remains vigilant, but the lack of new infections is a strong indication of the effectiveness of Government’s concerted efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 crisis is new. It is requiring us all to act, interact and communicate in different ways than we are used to. However, the social inequalities exacerbating COVID-19’s impact on persons with disabilities are not new. The risk in the response to the current crisis is that persons with disabilities will be left behind once again. The good news is that we already know what works. Fundamentally, we need social justice, effective inclusion, equality of opportunities and decent work.

This literature review examines lifelong learning opportunities in the informal economy. It highlights findings from the past decade on how skills are acquired by workers in the informal economy, and what barriers workers and enterprises face to access lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities. The review discusses financial arrangements and presents promising practices, including through formal and non-formal technical and vocational education and training, upgrading informal apprenticeships, skills development in rural areas, recognizing prior learning, and opportunities through digitalization. It identifies research gaps and new pointers for programming through skills and lifelong learning to promote transitions to formality.

This report examines how technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Viet Nam can be improved to increase the country’s global competitiveness.
Following three decades of sustained economic growth, in 2009, Viet Nam graduated to become a lower middle-class country. However, despite ample foreign direct investment, labor productivity remains low. Improved TVET will help boost labor productivity in Viet Nam by developing skilled workers that meet market demands. Recommendations in this report focus on reforms in the governance structure, organization, and management of TVET; effective teaching of the right skills; greater enterprise-based training and financial support; and more inclusive access to higher quality training.
